The Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA), Obong (Dr) Prince Ikim, on Tuesday conducted an extensive tour of the Uyo metropolis to oversee the desilting of drains and vegetation control.
His visits included key locations such as Oron Road, Udom Emmanuel Avenue, Shelter Afrique Estate, newly constructed Ring Roads among others, where he expressed heartfelt appreciation to the workers for their diligent efforts.
While referring to them as the “unsung heroes” of the agency, Dr. Ikim emphasized that their hard work and dedication were recognized and deeply appreciated by Governor Umo Eno and the good people of Akwa Ibom.
His words: “I call them the unsung heroes because their commitment to maintaining our drainage systems is invaluable. Our leader, the Governor, deeply values their contributions to the State and has consistently shown his appreciation for their hard work.”
The Israeli-trained security expert and heavyweight politician specifically extended his gratitude to Pastor Eno for the recent salary increase and the overall care provided to the ‘unsung heroes’ and other essential workers. He noted that the Governor’s commitment to improving the welfare of the agency’s workers has greatly boosted their morale and productivity.
“His Excellency has demonstrated genuine commitment to ensuring that those performing essential but often overlooked tasks are valued and cared for. This exemplifies Christ-centric leadership, and for us at AKSEPWMA, it means striving even harder.
“Of course you know that to whom much is given, much is expected. We will not rest on our oars in ensuring that Akwa Ibom State continues to be the cleanest and healthiest, in line with His Excellency’s ARISE agenda,” Dr. Ikim added.
The former Oruk Anam Council boss also advised residents against the indiscriminate disposal of waste. He pointed out that waste discarded carelessly often ends up in the drains, especially during rainfall, leading to blockages and subsequent flooding.
“I urge all residents to avoid indiscriminate waste disposal. Proper waste management is crucial in preventing blockages that cause flooding. Let us all contribute to keeping our environment clean and safe,” Dr. Ikim advised.
