Have you closely observed Akwa Ibom State and the several activities going on in its environment sector? When observed, it would be noticed that the State Government has developed a burning knack and uncanny approach to the management of its environment, to safeguard the health of its citizens.
It is unarguable that Gov. Udom Emmanuel practically subscribes to the saying that “health is wealth” and plays by the sentiment of such a saying. That and other manifold reasons explain why the governor had meticulously selected, inaugurated a team of ten membership strength to man the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency, with Obong (Hon.) Prince Ikim, leading as the chairman.
Under this leadership, the Agency has remained on course, seamlessly executing its functions, while the governor has remained stoic in channeling resources to the attainment of the Agency’s objectives.
There is a clear picture that the Government of Akwa Ibom State is not playing pranks with the environmental health of her citizenry as there is a tangible manifestation of an unpretentious desire of the Government to ensure that the State continues at her acme of efficiency in waste management and environmental protection in the Federation.
The proactive nature of the state government as seen in recent times under the Ikim-led AKSEPWMA to ensure a clean and green State can also be seen in various approaches:
(a) Strengthening ties with all stakeholders to ensure successful management of the Environment.
Taking, the recently concluded February edition of the state-wide Sanitation Exercise as a case study, reveals an untiring effort of Ikim in partnering with Stakeholders.
One could feel the robust relationship between AKSEPWMA and the Ministry of Information and Strategy (with respect to prompt information on Sanitation Day Exercise), as well as the Ministry of Environment and Petroleum Resources as a departure from what was previously obtainable. This, however, gives insight into the preparedness of the State towards achieving maximum results.
There is also a strong pact between the Agency and local communities to ensure that waste at the local communities is perfectly managed.
Also seen in Partnership with the Agency includes, Passion FM, Carlin Concept, Niger Pet, Hensek, Julius Berger, the NDDC and a host of other corporate and allied agencies, etc.
This relationship is phenomenal, result-oriented and the State Government through the Agency under Ikim must be commended for unwonted approaches.
