The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Frank Archibong, on Tuesday, recieved in audience, the new Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Commander Matthew .O. Olonisaye, in his office.
Mr. Archibong, who noted that most accidents are usually caused by ignorance of road users, called for a collaborative effort to ensure road worthiness.
His words: “Understanding road traffic signs, keeping to safety tips by road users and effective collaboration between stakeholders and the Agency will bring about more service delivery for citizens and help in curtailing road accident”.
He pointed out that cases of road accidents could be possibly curtailed should the Federal Road Safety Corps are involved in every road construction to give Professional inputs, directions and guide on road markings as well as pedestrians.
“All hands must be on deck including the grassroot dwellers to safeguard both vehicular movement and usages of pedestrians in order to our road safer and minimize road accident” he stated.
The Commissioner appreciated efforts so far made by the Commission especially in having the Interest of the state and citizens at heart.
The Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs boss, however promised to partner with the Commission’s stragegic awareness campaign on road worthiness.
Earlier in his short speech, Mr. Mathew .O. Olonisaye thanked the Commissioner for taking a keen interest in partnering with the FRSC for the safety of drivers in the State, saying that available indices of casualties and deaths by road accident was as a result of ignorance and disregard to safety tips.
Olonisaye, urged citizens to always ensure their Cars, buses, trucks or any kind of automobile meet the acceptable standard for safe driving and transport of people and baggages, and Informed of a proactive measures in collaboration with the government to help in sensitizing and training drivers across the 31 LGAs for a better understanding of road signs, safety rules and tips.
“We have recorded impressive milestone through our stragegic awareness campaign tour and we will not relent in our efforts to ensure safe driving. All we need is government and citizens collaboration to enable us achieve in our fight against road wreckle driving”. Olonisaye said.
A booklet on road safety tips and guide was presented to the Commissioner by the Sector Commander. Besides Mr. Olonisaye, others in his delegation during the familiarization visit include; , Arc. Elizabeth . J. Archibong (Protocol), Sector Commander’s orderly and SRMA M. B. Akpan.
The Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Elder Ini Iniekie, Chief of Staff to the Commissioner, Mr. Tommy Enodien, were in attendance.
