The unrest in Essien Udim LGA of Akwa Ibom State, Tuesday afternoon, took another dimension when hoodlums allegedly set Nigerian Army vehicle ablaze and took to their heels.
At the time of the report, no arrest was made.
A facebook user; Edikan Matthew, took to the blue App with the following information, “ongoing…an unknown gun men attacked military hilux, injured soldiers and pursue (sic) away. The hilux has been set ablaze right now.”
Yesterday, a police officer identified simply as Inspector Aniekan, was set ablaze by hoodlums in his apartment in Ikot Afangha community, Essien Udim.
The hoodlums were said to have traced him to his residence and razed it down around 2:30am while he was fast asleep.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Odiko Macdon, confirmed the incident. He said the Commissioner of Police, Amiengheme Andrew, was saddened by the attacks against police personnel in the state.
“We are aware of the incident and it is quite unfortunate. We have yet to really establish the remote and immediate causes of the incident and we will be able to establish that when investigations are concluded.
“There is an ongoing operation right now in the area and hopefully the culprits will be apprehended and I can assure you that justice will prevail at the end of investigation,” the PPRO said.
However, in view of an increase in frequency of criminal activities in the area and environs, the State governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel had over the weekend restricted the operation of motorcycles (popularly called Okada) and tricycles (popularly known as Keke) in Ikot Ekpene Federal Constituency of the state from 6p.m. to 7a.m.
The Constituency has Essien Udim, Ikot Ekpene and Obot Akara LGAs.
The governor said that the criminal activities have caused the lives of innocent lives, property and security personnel, explaining that the perpetrators of the dastardly acts operate using motorcycles and tricycles to commit these crimes and to escape.
