The Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA), Obong (Dr.) Prince Ikim, has declared an end to the era of verbal warnings, vowing that the state government will no longer tolerate environmental law violations.
This declaration came today, Sunday, as Ikim led his team on an intensive inspection of waste evacuation and the desilting of gutters within the Uyo metropolis, even as many residents attended church services.
Speaking during the inspection, the Israeli-trained security expert and heavyweight politician disclosed that several recalcitrant defaulters have already been prosecuted.
He assured the public that the government would not spare anyone, regardless of their status, if caught violating environmental laws.
Highlighting the ongoing efforts by AKSEPWMA, the former Oruk Anam Council Boss noted that the daily rainfall in the state has increased the risk of flooding, making it crucial for his agency to intensify waste management activities.
Ikim, who has been tirelessly supervising cleanup activities since Wednesday, urged residents to take responsibility for their surroundings and avoid dumping waste in gutters and on roads, warning that the government has since taken decisive action against offenders.
While giving special commendation to the State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for his administration’s massive investment in the environmental sector, Obong Ikim strongly advised residents to adhere strictly to environmental laws or risk facing the full weight of the law.
