In a sudden and shocking move, the Federal Government of Nigeria has ceased the planned sale of subsidised rice to civil servants.
TheHILL observes that the new development has sparked widespread disappointment among those who had eagerly anticipated the relief.
The decision to withdraw the offer was communicated through a fresh circular from the Ministry of Special Duty and Inter-Governmental Affairs, which was obtained by our correspondent in Abuja on Thursday.
The circular, dated August 2, 2024, and signed by the ministry’s Director of Human Resources, Aderonke Jaiyesimi, offered no explanation for the abrupt reversal, leaving civil servants in the dark about the future of the initiative.
The brief notice stated, “I am directed to refer to our internal circular in the Ministry (Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs) of August 1, 2024, on the above subject matter and to inform you that the internal circular is hereby withdrawn. Further details will be communicated in due course.”
Previously, the ministry had announced that civil servants could purchase 50 kg bags of rice for N40,000 as part of a broader effort by the Tinubu administration to alleviate the economic hardships faced by Nigerians.
However, with this new development, the fate of the initiative remains uncertain, and many civil servants are left wondering if they will ever see the promised relief.
