Fact-Check: SENATOR ANIETIE OKON IS NOT DEAD

TheHILL | POLITICS | JULY 23.

Social media reports on Friday morning that the pioneer National Publicity/Organizing Secretary, Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Anietie Okon, is dead are false.

TheHILL can reliably report that the news of the demise of the Senator, who represented Uyo Senatorial District in the third Republic had the largest tweets and retweets one hour after it was released.

When TheHILL‘s correspondent called a close sibling of the Senator, Mr. Asuquo, to verify the news, he wondered why people would wish to see the elderstatesman dead.

“The man (Senator Okon) is hale and hearty. I just left him a few minutes ago… Please ignore any unscrupulous element that is hiding under the revered media profession to tarnish another man’s image,” Asuquo warned.

However, the ‘man in the news’ has also come out to debunk news.

In a telephone chat with our reporter, the one-time Chairman of the Cross River Radio Corporation and Youth Leader of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) stated he was neither in the hospital nor ill, stressing that God Almighty was in control of his life.

He advised journalists and social media influencers to always investigate and get their facts right before writing.
