The Chairman of the Transition Committee, Uyo Local Government, Hon. Sylvia Ekong, has been honoured with the Humanitarian Service Award by the Rotary Club of Uyo Urban.
The award was presented during the installation ceremony of the club’s 4th President, Rotarian (Barr.) Emmanuel Etti, held at Helemah Event Centre, Uyo.
Hon. Ekong, who has gained widespread recognition for her continuous support to the downtrodden, especially women, widows, and youths, was commended for her efforts in empowering the less privileged with essential skills to help them become self-reliant.
The Media Consultant of the Uyo Council Boss, who received the award on her behalf, conveyed Hon. Ekong’s gratitude to the Rotary Club for considering her worthy of the honour. Hon. Ekong noted that her commitment to humanitarian service is driven by a genuine passion for helping others, rather than a pursuit of recognition.
“If service to humanity were a person, it would undoubtedly be Hon. (Pastor) Sylvia Bassey Ekong. She is someone who genuinely believes in putting humanity first,” the representative said. “Her contributions stem from her deep understanding of what it means to be in need and not receive help. This is why she tirelessly strives to bring hope to the homeless and those in need.”
It is worthy of note that earlier this year, Hon. Ekong extended support to several orphanages, providing them with food items, beverages, and other essentials in her ongoing efforts to alleviate the challenges faced by the less privileged.
The event attracted notable personalities, including the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Frank Archibong, who was also honoured with an award by the Rotary Club.
