The Centre for Human Rights and Accountability Network (CHRAN) has expressed its concern regarding the recent demolition of shops and stores along various areas in Uyo by personnel of the Uyo Capital City Development Authority (UCCDA).
In a press release issued on Tuesday, 5th March 2024, signed by its Director and Secretary, Otuekong Franklyn Isong and Barr. Christopher Ekpo, respectively, a copy was made available to TheHILL, CHRAN highlighted the need for the government to approach these demolitions with sensitivity and foresight.
CHRAN emphasized that while urban development and infrastructure improvement are important, it is equally crucial for the government to consider the impact of such actions on the livelihoods of the affected individuals, many of whom rely on these shops as their primary source of income.
The group raised concerns about the timing of the demolitions, particularly amid the current economic challenges facing the country.
CHRAN, specifically called on the government to prioritize finding alternative locations and shops for the affected shop owners before proceeding with any further demolitions.
In light of these concerns, CHRAN,
emphasized the importance of providing compensation to those whose shops and goods were destroyed during the demolitions as a gesture of goodwill and support during this challenging time.
It reiterated the importance of a balanced approach to urban development that takes into consideration the welfare and livelihoods of the citizens, and urged the government to act responsibly and with empathy towards those affected by the demolitions.
