It is the cardinal objective of the government not just to protect the lives and properties of its citizens, but to do so by creating a healthy environment and protecting it for the coexistence of its populace.
Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State has raised the bar of performance in Environmental Protection and Waste management function, with a total overhaul and renaissance of the system through:
* Investment in and deployment of ICT to create waste management innovation.
1. Launching of the Refuse-to-Riches initiative to promote recycling for revenue and employment generation.
2. Provide Economic models to deepen recycling business.
3. Provide affordable waste management services to inhabitants.
4. Streamlining of policies to promote and protect biodiversity, including massive awareness campaigns, enlightenment and enforcement.
5. Working with young people to develop ICT solutions on waste management and Environmental Protection practices.
6. Procurement of world-class facilities and globally-attuned initiatives to ease the work of waste management and environmental protection function
7. Determination of total properties in Akwa Ibom, starting with a pilot in all formal residential Housing Estate generating waste.
8. Determination of total commercial properties/facilities generating waste.
9. Demarcation of the city streets into zones using the map for planning of waste disposal schedule and routing and easy implementation of environmental work.
10. Determination of fast tracked zone or high volume waste generation spots within the State.
11. Provision of appropriate receptacle, size and polyethylene bags for different households for waste storage for collection and disposal.
12. Establishment of independent intervention team to handle contractor’s inadequacies and black spot.
13. Commencement of house-to-house refuse collection and generation of revenue for the State Government through collection of tariffs (Solid Waste Management) at the house-hold level.
14. Education and awareness on methods of waste reduction , recycling, reuse, storage, and collection and disposal.
15. Conduct comprehensive property enumeration, classification, and population data for Solid Waste Management in Akwa .
16. Identification of total number of streets in Akwa Ibom.
17. Reduce litter and eradicate street trading and Hawking through enlightenment and enforcement.
18. Create a sustainable recycling ecosystem.
19. Set up sanitation Corp.
20. Establish clean-up clubs across with an institutional framework.
21. Involvement of local communities in waste management and environmental protection function.
22. Partner with Donor Agencies, IOCs and Corporations for Social Responsibilities.
23 . Repeal the State Waste Management Law to make for a globally-attuned waste management system.
24. Determination of institutional properties/facilities generating waste.
25. Determination of total kilometer length of both dual and single roads in the State .
27. Determination of “black spot” or illegal solid waste cites across the State.
28. Estimation of population generating solid waste within the State
