Residents of Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, have commended the state government for its consistent efforts in desilting drains across the metropolis, which they say has significantly mitigated flooding in flood-prone areas.
The desilting exercise, carried out by the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA), has become part of the daily routine of the Agency, alongside waste evacuation and vegetation control.
However, on Thursday, some residents shared their thoughts with newsmen who monitored the exercise along Edet Akpan Avenue and Oron Road.
A clergyman whose church is located on Sylvanus Okon Street, off Edet Akpan Avenue; Pastor Philip Okon, lauded the state government for its dedication to maintaining clean and flood-free roads.
In his words: “The efforts of the Akwa Ibom state government have truly been a blessing. You see, some roads that used to be submerged for days after rainfall are now clear within minutes. I have carefully observed that both the immediate-past administration and the current one have ensured that the agency responsible works tirelessly, and I believe most of us who are keen followers of the steady progress in this State are grateful for that.”
Similarly, Mrs. Aniema Bassey, a boutique owner along Edet Akpan Avenue, expressed her appreciation for the government’s commitment to environmental protection.
“I want to thank Pastor Umo Eno for all the wonderful things he has done for residents, including ensuring that the waste management agency stays on top of their job. Whenever I travel outside Akwa Ibom, I feel proud because our state truly deserves the cleanest state award. The cleanliness has undoubtedly reduced the spread of diseases related to poor hygiene,” she noted.
A cement dealer along Oron Road, Mr. Theophilus Muonagor, also praised the regular desilting of gutters, submitting that it has improved the overall quality of life in the city. The Anambra State born businessman referred to Governor Eno as a “clean man.”
His words: “I have observed that this work (desilting) is done every day…We can all feel the impact of these efforts on our health and environment…In fact, your governor, Pastor Bassey Eno is truly a clean man who loves a clean environment.”
Fielding questions from newsmen, the Chairman of AKSEPWMA, Obong (Dr) Prince Ikim, lauded Governor Umo Eno for the massive support given to the agency, which has enabled it to sustain its efforts in keeping the state clean.
“God has blessed Akwa Ibom with governors who care deeply about our environment. From the immediate past Governor, His Excellency Mr. Udom Emmanuel, to the current Governor and our Leader, His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, their commitment has allowed us to maintain our status as the cleanest state in Nigeria since 2018. For us as an Agency, sadlled responsibilities, I can assure our people that we are dedicated and by God’s grace, we will continue to do our best to the glory of God and benefit of millions of our people,” Ikim said.
The Israeli-trained security expert and recently installed Life Member of the Historical Society of Nigeria (MHSN) also used the occasion to call on well-to-do individuals and corporate bodies in the state to partner with the government in keeping the environment clean.
“Our work should not rest solely on the government’s shoulders. We will continue to appeal to businesses and individuals to partner with us in maintaining this cleanliness and improving the health of our people,” Ikim urged.
