The former CEO of MTN Group, Sifiso Dabengwa, passed away in the early hours of today (Monday) after a prolonged battle with cancer.
TheHILL gathered that, Dabengwa served as the CEO of MTN Group from March 2011 until his resignation in 2015.
His departure came as the company sought to navigate a challenging period, particularly dealing with a record N1.04 trillion fine imposed by Nigeria for failing to disconnect over five million unregistered SIM cards.
Born in Zimbabwe, Dabengwa also briefly held the position of CEO for MTN Nigeria until 2006.
Reports from South African media have cited a family spokesperson, Themba Sibanyoni, confirming Dabengwa’s death.
Sibanyoni described Dabengwa as a titan in the telecommunications industry, noting that his tenure as CEO was marked by visionary leadership, integrity, and significant contributions to the sector.
He also highlighted Dabengwa’s advocacy for education and his strong belief in the transformative power of technology.
An MTN executive, who spoke from the company’s headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa, expressed deep sorrow over the news, stating that the entire MTN family is in mourning.
Dabengwa, we also gathered, remained a respected figure within the company, having led the telecommunications giant through critical years of growth and development.
Meanwhile, the departed former CEO reportedly battled cancer for some time before passing away in the early hours of Monday.
