The House of Representatives member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency in Akwa Ibom State, Unyime Idem, has raised serious concerns over the hazardous gas leaks affecting the oil-rich communities of Ikot Ukpong and Ikot Inyang Abia in Ukanafun Local Government Area.
TheHILL gathered that these leaks, stemming from a ruptured pipeline owned by Savanna Energy Limited, have prompted the evacuation of residents due to the life-threatening danger posed by the emissions.
During an inspection of the affected areas over the weekend, Rep. Idem, who heads the Public Account Committee at the Green Chamber, called on the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to take immediate remedial actions.
He emphasized the urgency of the situation, warning that further delay could escalate the environmental and health risks in these communities.
“I visited the site of the ruptured gas pipeline between Ikot Ukpong and Ikot Inyang Abia, where the leakage from Savanna Energy’s infrastructure is causing significant harm. It is crucial for NOSDRA and NMDPRA to enforce stricter oversight on oil companies operating in Akwa Ibom and the broader Niger Delta region,” Idem stated.
The Ukanafun born lawmaker also highlighted the absence of regular surveillance on the gas facilities, which contributed to the unchecked leak.
He urged Savanna Energy to immediately begin comprehensive monitoring of its infrastructure, assess the environmental impact, and take swift action to repair the damage.
The Ex-telecommunication boss stressed the need for Savanna Energy to conduct routine checks to prevent future incidents and ensure compliance with environmental safety standards.
He also advocated for adequate compensation for the affected communities, including a robust health plan for those exposed to the toxic gas.
“The risks posed by this gas emission are substantial, and Savanna Energy must take responsibility by providing compensation and health support to the impacted residents. I also appeal to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to deliver relief materials to these communities, who have suffered from this environmental disaster for weeks,” Idem added.
On his part, the village head of Ikot Ukpong, Chief Ndianabasi Monday Offong, expressed gratitude to Rep. Idem for his visit and voiced hope that relief would soon be provided.
The monarch also requested the extension of solar-powered street lights and the inclusion of more village youths in the lawmaker’s empowerment programs, to which Rep. Idem agreed, promising to include these needs in the next phase of his initiatives.
